An iconic dwelling of the Roman world, found atop the better class of Roman hills or scattered around the countryside. Often luxurious and maintained by Rome's elite. Pliny (the Elder) distinguished two kinds of villas: the villa urbana and the villa rustica. Ideal in splendid isolation surrounded by lush rolling fields or packed into a bustling cityscape.
